Family Field Trips to Zoo Miami

2024-25 Programs Funded by:

In the Spring of 2018, Sofia's Hope launched this program whereby on a bi-annual basis we invite patients and their families to an all expense paid day at Zoo Miami.  Transportation to and from the hospitals is provided courtesy of Miami Tour Company, Lunch for all is also included.  Activities vary but have included a one-hour guided walking tour of Africa and the Florida Everglades, rides on the Carousel, feeding the giraffes, tram tour of the zoo, and "Creature Feature" presentation.  After lunch families are free to enjoy the zoo on their own, with many spending time at the water park.  At the end of the day, each patient and their siblings receive an adopt-an-animal gift package as their souvenir.

Since COVID we now not only offer in-person Field Trips to Zoo Miami but also virtual visits where families with children facing a childhood cancer diagnosis can join us via Zoom twice a year for a free 30-minute interactive program, where they learn about various animals, their environments, adaptations, etc.  After their time with the Zoo Guides, participants, led by our partners at Nailed It Studio Miami, make their own unique art project related to the visit's theme.
