A Legacy of Hope: Remembering Dr. Steven Lipshultz, MD

There are people who come into your life and leave an impact you can measure.  In baby steps.  In incremental change.  And then there are those rare people whose impact is perhaps immeasurable, extending wider and further than imagined and which will live far beyond the short time you knew them.

Dr. Steven Lipshultz, MD, was one of those angels.

On September 5, 2026, the world lost an extraordinary physician, researcher, mentor, and human being. For those who were lucky enough to know him, we witnessed firsthand the depth his impact and the legacy he leaves behind, reflected in the countless lives he touched and the work he dedicated his life to advancing.

For me, Dr. Lipshultz was much more than a renowned pediatric cardiologist. He was an inspiration, a teacher, a friend and someone who helped me find meaning in the most devastating loss of my life.

He also gave our family something I can never repay him for…he gave us eight more years with my daughter Sofia.

When Sofia was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 4, our only focus was saving her life. We knew the treatment that was saving her life could damage her heart, but we had no choice but to proceed and hope for the best. Eight months into treatment, Sofia experienced her first heart failure. That was when we met Dr. Lipshultz.

He recommended a treatment for Sofia that, at the time, had primarily been used for adults. It wasn't the standard approach for a child Sofia’s age. But he knew it could help stabilize her heart and it did.

Dr. Lipshultz understood what so few people did or were willing to consider at the time: surviving childhood cancer wasn't simply about getting a child through treatment. It was also about giving that child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life afterward.

Because of Dr. Lipshultz, Sofia had eight more years.

Eight more birthdays.

Eight more years of laughter.

Eight more years of her dry humor and personality.

Eight more years of being her mom.

Those years are a gift me and my family will carry forever.

But Dr. Lipshultz’ impact didn't end with Sofia. He helped me see that Sofia's story could continue to make a difference for so many other families facing the same circumstances. He inspired me to dedicate my life to making a difference in the world of childhood cancer, ultimately leading to the creation of Sofia's Hope.

What began from unimaginable loss became a positive mission centered on hope, support, and research.

Sofia’s Hope has offered a lifeline to children and families navigating the many challenges that come with childhood cancer:  loss of community, devastating financial impact, disruption of the family unit, and the fear and uncertainty of every step of the journey.

Equally important, Sofia’s Hope has been able to invest resources in research and advocacy that can change their future of childhood cancer care. 

Dr. Lipshultz was an important part of that journey.

He was a pioneer in pediatric cardio-oncology, dedicating his career to understanding how cancer treatments affect children’s hearts, why those effects occur, and how they can be prevented or minimized. Because of the research he and others advanced, we now have a much better understanding of which children are at risk, how to monitor their hearts, and how to intervene earlier.

Today, children receive cardio-protective medication before and during cancer treatment, something that was not part of Sofia’s care when she was diagnosed. He also helped advance better ways to detect and diagnose cardiac problems and more effective treatments when they occur.

His work helped change the focus from simply helping children survive cancer to protecting their hearts so they can live healthier lives long after treatment ends.

Dr. Lipshultz was also the kind of mentor who saw potential in others and encouraged them to reach higher, ask harder questions, and believe that their work could make a difference. He led with compassion and lived by a simple principle: Do what is best for the child and help to change the ending. He didn't simply treat patients. He cared for the whole child.

And he didn't keep his knowledge to himself. He shared it, inspiring generations of physicians and researchers who will carry his work forward.

When I think about Dr. Lipshultz, I don't just think about the doctor who helped care for my daughter. I think about the person who helped me see that even after losing Sofia, her life could continue to have meaning.

That our loss could become a source of hope for others.

I told his daughter Emma that her dad was an incredibly special and unique human being who positively impacted so many people. That he wasn’t only a mentor to me, but a friend who I will miss terribly. And I meant every word. I will always be grateful to him.

Grateful for the eight years he helped give us.

Grateful for everything he taught me.

Grateful for the children and families whose lives he touched.

And grateful for the hope he gave so many of us.

And his work isn't finished.

His legacy lives in the children whose lives he changed, the physicians he mentored, the research that will continue to save lives, and the families who were given more time together.

For me, honoring Dr. Lipshultz means continuing the work of Sofia's Hope. Continuing to advocate for children and families facing childhood cancer. Continuing to support pediatric cardio-oncology. And continuing to turn loss into something meaningful. Hope.  Because that is what he taught me: Never stop trying to change the ending.

Thank you, Dr. Lipshultz, for everything. Your legacy will live on. And I will do everything I can to keep it alive.

For Sofia.

For the children.

For the families.

For the future.
